Protective actions — from source

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas. Please report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the National Weather Service when you can do so safely. Additional information is available at www.weather.gov. The next statement will be issued this evening by 1130 PM CDT.

What to do during a flood warning

Flooding is occurring or imminent. This is a slower-onset event than flash flooding but equally dangerous on the roads.

  • Move valuables and people to higher floors or higher ground.
  • Never drive through flooded roads. Even familiar routes become deadly when water depth cannot be judged.
  • Disconnect utilities at the main switches if flooding reaches the building.
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if wet or standing in water.
  • Listen to local officials for evacuation orders and follow posted detours.

General guidance based on NWS, FEMA, and Ready.gov. Always follow instructions from local officials, which take precedence.
