What to do during a red flag warning

Critical fire weather: dry fuels, low humidity, and strong winds will allow any fire to spread rapidly.

  1. No outdoor burning of any kind. Even small sparks (yard equipment, chains dragging from trailers, cigarettes) can start a major fire.
  2. Review your evacuation plan and have a go-bag ready if you are in a fire-prone area.
  3. Know multiple routes out of your neighborhood; primary roads can close.
  4. Clear combustible debris (dry leaves, pine needles) from at least 30 feet around your home.
  5. Report any smoke or fire immediately; early detection saves lives and structures.

General guidance based on NWS, FEMA, and Ready.gov. Always follow instructions from local officials.
