What to do during a tornado warning
A tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar. Seek shelter immediately.
- Move to the lowest floor of a sturdy building, to an interior room with no windows (bathroom, closet, hallway).
- If in a mobile home, leave immediately for a permanent structure or designated shelter.
- If in a vehicle, do not try to outrun the tornado in urban or congested areas. Abandon the vehicle and lie flat in a low ditch, covering your head.
- Cover yourself with a mattress, blankets, or a helmet to protect against debris.
- Stay sheltered until the warning expires and you hear an all-clear.
General guidance based on NWS, FEMA, and Ready.gov. Always follow instructions from local officials.
