Protective actions — from source
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads. Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become unstable and unsafe. Please report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the National Weather Service when you can do so safely.
What to do during a flash flood warning
Rapidly rising water can overtake a vehicle in seconds. "Turn Around, Don't Drown."
- Move to higher ground immediately. Do not wait.
- Never drive, walk, or swim through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down; a foot can float a vehicle.
- Abandon a stalled vehicle in rising water; reach higher ground on foot.
- Avoid storm drains, culverts, and drainage ditches.
- Stay informed via NOAA Weather Radio or local emergency alerts.
General guidance based on NWS, FEMA, and Ready.gov. Always follow instructions from local officials, which take precedence.
